Golden Age Chess Tactics: Brilliance from the 1920s and 1930s

Golden Age Chess Tactics: Part 1 – Brilliance from the 1920s and 1930s

The interwar years were a golden age for chess, brimming with romantic sacrifices and deep combinations. In this two-part series, we dive into masterful tactical games that defined an era. Today we explore a razor-sharp miniature from the 1920s and a thrilling attacking masterpiece from the 1930s.

🕰️ Game 1: Rudolf Spielmann vs. F. Sämisch, Bad Pistyan 1926

Opening: King's Gambit (C33)
Result: 1–0

Known as the "Master of Attack," Rudolf Spielmann was never one to shy away from danger. In this fiery King's Gambit, he sacrifices material early to expose the black king. What follows is a cascade of tactical blows, ending in a brilliant mating net.

  • ⚔️ Watch for the bold bishop sacrifice on move 12.
  • ♞ Note how the knight jumps in to cut off the king's escape.
  • ♛ Spielmann's queen leads the final attack with elegance and power.

🕰️ Game 2: Alexander Alekhine vs. Max Euwe, Zurich 1934

Opening: Queens Gambit Declined (D31)
Result: 0–1

Here Euwe wins a Queens Gambit Declined ... !

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll travel further into the 1940s and 1950s, uncovering more tactical brilliance from legends of the board.

How to beat Nora (2200) - a ChessBot on chess.com

Hi there,
I never thought I'd see the day when my son would actually get ahead of me in chess ... but it seems these days are fast approaching - and now I'm struggling to keep up with him !!

Today I'm posting a game he recently played against Nora, a ChessBot on Home - Chess.com rated 2200 ..

He tells me that it's not as difficult to beat her as one might think, but I beg to differ ... I've played several games against her in the last few days, and can't seem to finish the job, despite having a winning advantage for at least the first two thirds of the game ... He thinks that my approach might actually slightly wrong and that I ought to use chess.com's analysis engine more to figure out how to maintain my winning advantage.  Afterall, it seems that Nora's main foible is that she brings her Queen out too early and surely needs to be punished for it .. ?!!

Result!! 1 - 0

Here is my son's game, to set me an example:

As usual, any comments welcome ...

It is good to play kings gambit because...

It is good to play the kings gambit in most games, because if your opponent might go for taking the pawn.If he does, you can develop. It is important in games to develop, other wise,if you move the same piece all the time, all the other peices will just not get involved in the game.So remember to DEVELOP.
The picture bellow is me.
